Law of war

The law of war, also referred to as international humanitarian law or the law of armed conflict, is the branch of international law relating to the conduct of war, which includes jus ad bellum (the law governing the permissibility of going to war) and jus in bello (the law applicable during war). The laws of war define sovereignty and nationhood, states and territories, occupation, and other critical terms of public international law. Among other issues, the modern laws of war address the declarations of war; acceptance of surrender and the treatment of prisoners of war; the principles of distinction, as well as military necessity and proportionality; and the prohibition of certain weapons that cause unnecessary or excessive suffering.
